Break Down

This Wale-Marky “beef”. Woah. Off the bat, let’s be real, neither of our two signed artists have really hit it big just yet. They both have the tools and backing to make it, and if you think about it they’re hitting different markets. Wale: Older, lyrical, fuckin’ weird, dope. Marky: Younger, radio-friendly, fresh, dope. So they have some bad blood. Ok, we’re still good. But now everybody acting like they’re in that West VA primary vid, and although they’re all democrats they still feel like Barack-Hillary is Apollo-Rocky. Nah, of course this isn’t as serious as Apollo-Rocky, but it should be addressed.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The imeem story, as told by the Imeem people themselves, goes as such: Wale was contacted to kind of guest-edit a segment that they were starting up. He was asked to provide a couple artists from the DMV off the top of his head that he liked. NOT included in that list was Marky. At the same time, the imeem people contacted illroots to get a DMV playlist put together. Marky WAS included in this list. So at this point, in order to keep the promo the same as the list given by Wale, the IMEEM people had to cut off some tracks from the illroots list, and so Marky was taken off. Nobody can say for sure why it was that Wale didn’t mention Marky to begin with. It could be that he didn’t feel like mentioning an artist that is getting attention on his own, or maybe he just didn’t even think of mentioning him. Dunno, speculate away.

The bigger issue though isn’t the beef itself — if you can call it that; it’s that fact that everybody feels like they gotta jump on some side of the fence because of it. Now people saying “Wale wack, Marky the real DMV cat.” or “Marky a bitch on some fake-ass milli shit”.

First off, you know Wale lyrically is pretty far from wack. The biggest load of hate I’ve seen is from inside the DMV. “Wale is dope musically, but as a person, don’t fuck with him.” Come on now, how many of you actually chill with him and get your high ruined cause dude’s a dick? Not too many. Mr. Carter’s rumored to have done some sheisty things to get where he’s at, but it doesn’t take much away from the Blueprint. And don’t forget he did agree to do a promo specifically promoting DMV artists only. And shit, lets be real: it’s not like the dude is big-time just yet. The Rap Ambassador can’t afford to hate on where he’s from.

As for the Marky track: I liked it. You could tell duke was talking about something and was meaning it, and instead of doing another uncoordinate “A Millie” remix, he changed it to something he wanted to say. But all of a sudden that its something about Wale, a bunch of Marky dick-riders come out of the wood-works to say “Fuck Wale”. Come on now, get out of the high chair and join the rest of the world. The problem with hip hop is that too many people make it a popularity contest instead of just listening to the music. Wale and Marky might have some issues they need to work out, and if they put it to wax so be it; just means we get more music. They’re not talking about you. It’s a shame that in the same month that we have one of the deadliest weekends since Lincoln got shot and the Trinidad section resembles a Baghdad checkpoint, the thing that gets the most people all riled up is a hip-hop beef. Damn, don’t forget: it’s up to you to push the DMV artists, not Wale and Marky.
